PARIS – The 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal for Women’s Rugby Sevens is a three-team race according to oddsmakers. New Zealand leads the way with +100 Olympic betting odds, but Australia narrowly trails with +160 odds to win the gold medal.

Although Canada was formerly atop of the women’s World Rugby rankings and now stand at third, those rankings are deceiving. Canada’s +900 odds to win Pool A over New Zealand (-1000) support that the Canadians aren’t as good as World Rankings perceive.

PARIS – Betting odds for the Men’s Rugby Sevens at the 2024 Paris Olympics favor France with +200 odds. However, there are plenty of other talented teams like Fiji (+550) and South Africa (+1400) with longer Olympic betting odds to claim gold.

Can New Zealand Continue Its Rowing Dominance In The Olympics?

New Zealand has been disproportionately successful at rowing in the Olympics.
New Zealand has +135 odds to win the gold medal in the women’s eight.

TOKYO - When people think of New Zealand, rowing is perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind. However, it is the most successful Olympic sport in the country, and has yielded 24 total medals, with 11 of them being gold.

Granted, athletics has also yielded them 24 medals, but only 10 of those have been gold, meaning that Olympic rowing is New Zealand’s most successful sport.

In the Tokyo Olympics, New Zealand is favored to pick up several more gold medals in the women’s coxed eight rowing and women’s single sculls. These two events happen on Saturday, with coxed eight kicking off at 10:20 p.m. EST, and single sculls a bit earlier, at 10 p.m. EST.

In the coxed eight, New Zealand finds itself favored with +135 odds, but a tough United States team with +210 odds prevents them from being favored over the entire field. They managed to hold off the Americans and the Australians, who finished in third and second place respectively.

This seems like an event at which the Kiwis could pick up a gold medal and add to their already impressive rowing total.

Emma Twigg has not won an Olympic medal, and has competed in three previous Olympic Games’, coming in fourth place twice. Twigg won the 2014 World Championships as a single sculler, and a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships.

Sanita Puspure, however, might be a challenge that is too tough to be overcome. Puspure is the reigning world champion, having won in both 2018 and 2019, the last time the World Championships was held.

She is flat-out dominant, and is the biggest barrier to Twigg breaking through to the gold medal, although it is entirely possible that Twigg manages to overcome her, or, failing that, medal in this Olympics for the first time in her career.

For Olympic betting fans, this competition has it all - a solid underdog story, a dominant champion, and great betting odds.

New Zealand Projected To Win Both Rugby Gold Medals

New Zealand’s men’s rugby team has +225 odds to win the gold medal, tied with Fiji for shortest odds in the field.
The women’s team is the -250 betting favorite to win gold, far ahead of any other country.

TOKYO – New Zealand is projected to have a big year in the 2021 Olympics, at least in rugby where both the men’s and women’s teams are the favorites to win the event.

In 2016, the women’s team won silver while the men’s team failed to place on the podium.

Will New Zealand Sweep The Rugby Events?

If the Olympic betting odds are accurate, New Zealand should be able to bring home at least one of the gold medals in the form of the women’s team.

The odds seem to indicate that not only are the Black Ferns far and away the best team but that there’s no true competitor. Australia, sitting at +600 odds, has the apparent next best chance to win but there is no other country with odds short of +1000.

If the women’s team were to lose it would surely be a significant upset considering they have won 16 of the 22 World Series tournaments.

"New Zealanders are extremely passionate about rugby sevens and we can't wait to watch both the men's and women's teams take to the field in Japan with the fern proudly displayed on their chests," said Kereyn Smith, CEO of the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

The tougher ask could be from the men’s New Zealand team who also have the shortest odds, but this time those odds are shared with Fiji. In Rio, Fiji won the gold medal and will be looking to repeat as champions.

Meanwhile, the men’s team (the All Blacks) will be looking to improve as the team missed the podium in 2016. The All Blacks will return six players from the 2016 Olympic team.
