Centers:

Joel Embiid

Bam Adebayo

Team USA’s inclusion of three centers may be the most notable development that caused their slight shift on the BetOnline board with 2024 Olympic betting odds, as many other teams feature some of the best centers in the world.

Serbia (+400): Nikola Jokic

Canada (+600): Zach Edey, Dwight Powell, and Kelly Olynyk

France (+800): Rudy Gobert

The 2024 Olympics will not be the first time that international centers are at the forefront, as many have starred before. In fact, teams that feature high-level centers have given Team USA trouble in past international basketball tournaments have often given the Americans trouble.

Past losses against Lithuania, Germany, and Canada at the 2023 Fiba World Cup were all against teams that starting-caliber NBA centers played for like Jonas Valanciunas, Moritz Wagner, and Olynyk. Those losses are likely why Bam Adebayo, Anthony Davis, and Joel Embiid are all on the team. They are all strong defensive players who have made at least one All-Defensive Second Team or better in recent years.

Given the strength of the USA Basketball roster in the frontcourt to counter previous weakness, they are likely the best team with Olympic betting odds.

BEIJING - Nathan Chen, one of the top male figure skaters in United States' history, looks to complete his resume when he competes in the 2022 Winter Olympics Figure Skating events. Chen is the clear betting favorite with -350 odds to win.

Men's Beijing Olympic Figure Skating Odds

Nathan Chen (USA) -350

Yuzura Hanyu (JPN) +275

Yuma Kagiyama (JPN) +900

Shoma Uno (JPN) +1400

Vincent Zhou (USA) +1600

Mark Kondratiuk (ROC) +5000

Main Competition For The Event Is Himself

With Chen's closest competitor in the Olympic men's figure skating odds listed at +275 (Yuzura Hanyu), it is clear that anything but a Chen win would be a massive upset. The recipe for an upset may have less to do with his opponent’s potential for greatness, and more to do with the likelihood Chen falls apart on the largest of stages.

Nathan Chen went into the 2018 Winter Olympics as the betting favorite to win the figure skating event but totally fell apart in the short program portion of the event. The short program portion is the first event for men's individual figure skating, and Chen finished in 17th.

He had stated that he was struggling with nerves, and that was apparent in both the individual and team events that he performed in.

Part of what makes betting on the Olympics so difficult is the nerve factor for athletes who are attempting to live out their dreams with millions of people watching. Chen struggled with that the first time around but has more than proven his worldwide dominance since 2018.

Complete Dominance Should Mean Chen's A Larger Favorite

Even with sportsbooks favoring a Chen victory, he still may not be a large enough favorite.

Nathan Chen's Greatness Since The 2018 Winter Olympics

Chen has won 15 of 16 events

Chen has won the past three world titles (2020's was canceled)

Hanyu and Chen have faced off thrice since, and Chen has won all three by at least 20 points

Five straight victories at the U.S. Championships has put Nathan Chen in elite company, he is now the first man to win the event five straight times since Dick Button. Button's run of seven straight National titles went from 1946 to 1952.

Chen has dominated the US Figure Skating Scene for a long time, but his greatness in the U.S. Championships alone should make him a massive favorite in the Olympics.

Germany has three of the four shortest betting odds to win the men's Skeleton event in the Winter Olympics

Women's Skeleton odds reflect a similar German advantage, with two of the four shortest odds to win

BEIJING - The first 2022 Winter Olympics Skeleton event takes place on Thursday, February 10. Betting odds on the for both the men's and women's Skeleton events have been released and there is value to be found for both events.

Men's and women's Skeleton events have two different styles of betting odds apiece: outright winner and top three finish. When betting on the Olympics there are often "Top Three Winner" odds because that indicates if an athlete medaled in their event.

German Men Given Strong Odds To Win Multiple Medals

Three of the four shortest odds for a top three finish in the men's Skeleton event belong to Olympians from Germany.

German Athlete:

Odds To Win Outright:

Odds To Medal:

Alexander Gassner

+550

+125

Axel Jungk

+550

+125

While none are outright favored to medal, the betting odds indicate a strong likelihood that the German men win at least one if not multiple medals. The performance by Christopher Grotheer, Alexander Gassner, and Axel Jungk at the Skeleton World Cup certainly contributed to that.

German Athlete:

World Cup Time:

World Cup Finish:

German Women Given Strong Odds Despite Poor Performance At 2022 Skeleton World Cup

Similar to their fellow countrymen, German women have been given short Olympic Skeleton betting odds to medal and win outright. Unlike their German counterparts, the German women did not perform well at the 2022 World Cup.

German Athlete:

Odds To Win Outright:

Odds To Medal:

World Cup Finish:

12th

Hannah Neise

+1800

Of the three, only Hannah Neise's odds to win or medal make sense. She has the 10th shortest odds for both bet styles after finishing in eighth at the World Cup. Tina Hermann and Jacqueline Loelling have the second and fourth shortest odds in both events even though both finished tenth or worse at the World Cup.

BEIJING - Following the announcement that the NHL and NHL Players Association have pulled all players from representing their countries in the 2022 Winter Olympics, sportsbooks have pulled all Olympic Ice Hockey odds.

The announcement that NHL players will not play in the the Olympics has left sportsbooks on thin ice. It is currently unclear which leagues will allow their players to be considered for the Winter Olympics.

Some speculate that the Russian Olympic Committee may see the largest Olympic betting odds benefit because of the NHL players lack of participation. The KHL - the second best hockey league in the world - is allowing players to participate in Beijing 2021 and is over 50% comprised of Russian athletes.

Finland (6%) and Czech Republic (6%) may also see their Olympic Ice Hockey odds shorten, as over a tenth of the KHL are of these nationalities.

Canada is in a different boat leaving the board as the betting favorite Despite a 7% representation in the KHL, Canada's hockey odds will likely get longer as notable NHL veterans like Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid and Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Alex Pietrangelo will be absent after being named to the team.

Notable Canadian Hockey Players Missing Olympics

Brad Marchand

Sidney Crosby

Patrice Bergeron

Jonathan Huberdeau

Connor McDavid

Shea Theodore

Alex Pietrangelo

Marc-Andre Fleury

Canada has won two silver medals in the past (Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994) but putting together a team this late will be a real challenge for Shane Doan and Claude Julien. Even further, with concerns over health and safety of players, coaches, and staff, Canada also withdrew from the Spengler Cup on Monday.

Building Teams Without Professional Players

One possible route for the Americans and Canadians to go when building their teams is through the NCAA. Some options from the player pool for the Canadians include: Owen Power (1st overall selection), Mason McTavish (3rd selection), and Kent Johnson (5th). Americans Matty Beniers (2) and Luke Hughes (4th) provide the United States with some great options as well.

An important piece of recent history is that the 2018 Winter Olympics ice hockey tournament was also played with no NHL players.

The Russians won gold, Germany got silver and Canada got the bronze. The difference between then and now is that each country knew well in advance who would make up their teams. With the NHL pulling their players so close to the Olympics, many countries will be left in tough spots.

The Russian team was give +100 odds to win the Gold for the 2018 Winter Olympic tournament, which may give some indication as to how strong of an advantage they have given their KHL pipeline.

For that same tournament, Canada was given +450 odds and the USA was given +1000 odds to win the gold medal.
