Skateboarding, Surfing, Climbing and Karate are the new Olympic sports.

Baseball and Softball also make a return to the games after nearly 15 years.

TOKYO – The Olympic Games haven’t had the same level of pull as in years past, at least that’s what the numbers say. The IOC is hoping that the addition of a handful of new events will help bring viewership back up to where it used to be.

The Olympics have been on a decline in viewership and in 2016, they capped off the lowest-rated and least-watched Olympics in years.

The opening ceremonies of the 2016 Summer Olympics had just 29.3 million views, down from 40.7 million in 2021 and 34.9 million in 2008.

There’s no definitive reason as to why the viewership has gone down and it’s likely a compilation of a multitude of reasons, but the committee is hoping to combat this problem by adding five new sports that are also available for Olympic betting fans to take advantage of.

The Olympic Solution?

The 2021 Olympics will see skateboarding, surfing, climbing and karate make their Olympic debuts while baseball and softball (grouped as one event) make a reappearance after 13 years.

Those interested in taking part in the Olympic betting odds will now have a new slew of sports to watch and bet on.

Bovada is offering odds on most of the new events, favoring Japan in baseball, the USA in softball, the USA in men’s Olympic skateboarding, Brazil in women’s skateboarding, the USA and Brazil in surfing, with a mixed result in karate among the different weight classes.

Nobody knows for sure whether the addition of the new sports will have any sort of positive impact, but it’s a good sign that something new is being attempted as it’s fair to say the Olympic Games were getting a little stale in certain areas.

Sky Brown is a skateboarder that will be on Team GB, becoming the youngest competitor for a Summer Olympic event to represent England.

The athlete is 13 years old and expected to medal for Great Britain for skateboarding.

The Tokyo Summer Olympics will debut the sport of skateboarding as an Olympic one for the first time in the history of the Olympics.

LONDON – Since 1928, Margery Hinton, a British swimmer, has held the record as the youngest summer Olympian to represent England yet almost 100 years later, Sky Brown will now hold that title and break the record.

Brown is a famous skateboarder that will be 13 years and 11 days old when the 2020 Olympic Games begin on July 23. Hinton was 13 years and 44 days old at the time of her event, being edged out by Brown by a mere 33 days.

But the youngest Olympian in England’s history was in 1932, during the Winter Olympics where Cecilia Colledge figure skated for her country at the tender age of 11.

Who Is Sky Brown?

Sky Brown is the daughter of a Japanese mother and an English father, which is how she is able to represent Team Great Britain (GB) in the Olympic Games.

The young athlete speaks fluent Japanese and is hoping not to cause any issues with Japan by being on Team GB. She would like to bring the countries together and has said she wants to connect with the Japanese fans in their native language if given the chance.

Brown placed third in the World Skate qualifiers. She has been skateboarding since she was in preschool as she comes from a family of surfers and skateboarders. One day, she would like to represent both sports in the Olympics because she is very passionate.

For now though, she will take the win of being the youngest to compete for Team GB in their Summer Olympic history as well as be a part of the debut of Olympic skateboarding as a recognized sport.

“I’m just doing my thing, having fun,” said Brown. “I’m just a girl doing what she loves!”

Brown hopes to be an inspiration at the Tokyo Olympics to young girls all over the world to show them that anything is possible. She would also like to get more girls into the sport. She realizes that skateboarding can be scary, having endured a skull fracture and multiple broken bones over a year ago during practice but that incident has not deterred her in any way.

“I get scared all the time, in skateboarding, I get scared a lot, “said Brown. “Also, that’s what’s cool about skateboarding, you never know what’s coming next. I do get scared all the time but I like the feeling of beating my scaredness, it’s a bit like beating myself.”

When Will The Competition Begin?

Brown will be skateboarding into the Olympics on August 4-5. The event will be taking place at the Ariake Urban Sports Park. While the young competitor is expected to medal for Team GB, there may not be any odds on her specifically to be found on regulated state sportsbooks due to her age.

However, nearing the time of the event, other online sportsbooks may put odds on the young athlete. Either way, Sky Brown is a name that will not soon be forgotten in the world of sports for years to come.

Aori Nichamura and Misugo Okamoto are projected to win the Women’s events.

TOKYO – For the first time in Olympic history, skateboarding will be a part of the Olympics.

In the inaugural events, the United States is projected to sweep the Men’s events while Japan is supposed to win on the Women’s side.

Men’s Events – USA Favored in Both

The United States will likely ride the coattails of Nyjah Hutson, the favorite in the Men’s Street competition.

Hutson is undeniably one of the greatest street skaters of all time, having amassed more prize money than any other skateboarder. Olympic betting fans would be smart to bet on Hutson as he has long been considered the favorite, essentially since the event was announced.

However, there is viable competition in the form of Yuto Horigome who just ended Hutson three-year streak of winning the world championship last month.

Tokyo 2021 - Mens Street Odds

Nyjah Huston (USA) +125

Yuto Horigome (JPN) +200

Sora Shirai (JPN) +900

Jagger Eaton (USA) +1600

Kelvin Hoefler (BRA) +1600

Gustavo Ribeiro (POR) +2200

Aurelien Giraud (FRA) +2500

A trio of Americans are the betting favorites in the Men’s Park event. Heimana Reynolds leads the way with Cory Juneau and Zion Wright trailing on the odds board.

Reynolds is the No. 1 ranked skateboarder in the world and is rightfully listed as the favorite. Even if Reynolds loses, which may be unlikely, the Gold Medal will likely come back to America as Juneau is ranked No. 2 in the world.

Women’s Events – Odds Suggest Japan Wins

The first-ever Olympic skateboarding event is projected to be a bit closer on the Women’s side.

Aori Nishimura and Pamela Rose share the co-favorite title with +250 odds a piece with Rayssa Leal close behind.

Tokyo 2021 - Womens Street Odds

Aori Nishamura (JPN) +250

Pamela Rosa (BRA) +250

Rayassa Leal (BRA) +350

Leticia Bufoni (BRA) +800

Momiji Nishiya (JPN) +800

Pamela Rosa is the No. 1 ranked female street skater in the world and by a pretty wide margin. Seeing her as a co-favorite may surprise many and she could carry betting value into the Olympics.

The Women’s Park event is headlined by Misugo Okamoto and Sakura Yosozumi, a Japanese duo who are fairly heavily favored to win the event. Their biggest competition, according to the odds, is Sky Brown a 12-year-old from Great Britain.

Brown could be one of the youngest Olympians in history.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Sky Brown, who is currently 11 years old, could potentially qualify for the park skateboarding event at Tokyo 2020.

By the time the Summer Olympics happen, Brown will be 12 years old. Although she is young, she has won many top-level skateboarding competitions. Thanks to that, she is on the way to represent Great Britain in the park skateboarding at the Summer Olympics.

A Young Champion

The Olympics would not be Brown’s first competition. Despite her age, Brown has won many different competitions. She recently won gold at the United Kingdom National Skateboarding Championship. She has also won bronze during the Park World Skateboarding Championship in Brazil.

Thanks to her accomplishments, it is almost guaranteed that she will represent Great Britain in the park competitions at Tokyo 2020. This will likely make her the youngest Olympian at the Summer Olympics.

"I don't feel any nerves. It will be really cool to be the youngest Olympian. People might think you're too young or that you can't do it, but I want to show that it's not about your size or age. I want to be in the Olympics to inspire other girls to show them you can do anything. I'm excited for Tokyo,” said Brown.

Brown is not just good at skateboarding. She is also an accomplished surfer as well. Tokyo 2020 will also have surfing as a competition. However, Brown decided to focus on skateboarding for the Summer Olympics.

"I like them both the same, they're super similar," said Brown. "But it's like if you go and get ramen and ice cream – if you eat too much ramen you want to go and get ice cream. I used to be better at surfing, but I've been skating a lot lately, and I've got way better from doing contests. It's made me want to go harder."

Brown appearing at the Olympics is almost guaranteed. Tokyo 2020 will feature the inaugural skateboarding competition and Brown is planning to take the competition by storm. Olympic odds on her will likely appear as soon as it is confirmed that Brown is going. The Women’s Park competition will happen on August 5, 2020.

More than 11,000 athletes are expected to compete in the Olympic Games.

Over 206 Nations will be playing for the gold.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- It’s been 56 years since Tokyo has hosted the Olympics and in 2020, they will introduce five new events to the Games. These events include karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding.

Baseball and softball will also be a part of Tokyo 2020 but this will not be their first Olympic debut. Softball and baseball have been in and out of the Olympic Games since the nineties. The last time these sports were part of the Olympics was in 2008.

A Closer Look At The Five New Events

Fittingly, karate will make its Olympic debut in the country where it all began. Both men and women will be competing in two different types of karate. Kata also is known as sparring will be centered around the athlete’s technique when it comes time for judges to score. Women will spar for two minutes while men will spar for three. The fighter with the most points will win in the sparring match. A draw would go to the person that scored a point first.

The second form of karate that will be done is called Kumite. Kumite is all about forms. The fighting is based on judging your virtually based opponent's moves and responding with the correct form. At the end of the match, judges raise flags of the color of the fighter they believe is the winner.

Sport climbing will be an event with both male and female competitors. There will be three separate parts to this event, bouldering, lead, and speed climbing. Bouldering requires athletes to try multiple routes on a 4-meter wall. Speed climbing is done on a 15-meter wall with a course in place. Two climbers will compete with each other to see who can climb the wall the fastest.

Lead climbing is when the athlete attempts to climb a 15-meter wall in 6 minutes using a rope along the way. Whichever athlete makes it to the top or makes it the highest within the time span is the winner. Each competitor will have to take part in all three events where the scores will be combined to place for medals.

Skateboarding will involve both street and park style skateboarding for male and female competitors. Street skateboarding will take place on a course styled like a street that will help athletes reveal their skillset. Park skateboarding will be done on a hollowed-out skatepark style course.

Surfing will be making waves at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. The event will be comprised of 20 men and 20 women who will take part in various shortboard events. Shortboards are surfboards that are 6 feet in length. If this new sport is well received by viewers, longboards could be part of the future Olympic Games.

OlympicBettingOdds.com recalls that baseball and softball have had a love/hate relationship with the Olympics. After 12 years, they will both finally reenter the Games. Baseball will have a total of 16 games played by men and softball will have a total of 17 games played by women. All of this Olympic summer fun begins in July 2020 in Tokyo.
