The odds for the most Olympic gold medals in 2024 have the United States as a heavy favorite. With -850 odds, one would need to risk $8.5 for every dollar won. In other words, a bet of $85 on the US to win the most gold medals would pay out $95 ($85 bet + $10 winnings).

This expensive bet makes sense, as the United States being dominant in athletics and swimming creates an excellent upper hand.

The US has led the Athletics gold medal count every year. In fact, you have to go back to 1980, when the United States led a boycott of the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow to find the last time the US didn't finish atop the gold medal table for track and field.

As for swimming, it's a similar story. The 1988 Olympics in South Korea was the last time the US didn't finish with the most gold medals in swimming. But, 2020 was a challenge for the US, as it was the first time on their run that they didn't have at least five more gold medals than the next country. With a strong swimming focus from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, and China, the swimming events may hold the US back.

Still, the US has been dominant over the last few Olympics, gaining the most gold medals every year since 1992 when Unified Team - a joint group of former Soviet republics - beat out the US by eight.

What Will The Paris Olympic Gold Medals Look Like?

One fun fact about the gold medals for Paris 2024 is their design. The medal comes from iron girders on the Eiffel Tower, which were replaced during renovations and refurbishments. France's mint, the Monnaie de Paris, is responsible for the creation of the medals which feature Nike, the Greek goddess of victory on the back. She is seen running forward with the Eiffel Tower on one side and the Acropolis on the other.

BEIJING – The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics are just two weeks away and there are plenty of betting odds to get in on. Some of the most popular betting odds that are available for the Winter Olympics are the total medals won by each country.

It is strange seeing Russia’s medal total set so high being that they have yet to hit the Over in the last five Olympics. In fact, they have only broken 30 total medals won once in that time period.

Norway is the -250 betting favorite to lead all countries in the overall gold medal count.
The United States has the fourth-shortest odds to have the most gold medals at +800.
Germany, Canada and Russia are the only other countries with odds short of +1000.

BEIJING - Norway is favored to lead the Beijing Winter Olympics in gold medals but the United States aren’t too far down the list.

The United States has historically done pretty well in the Winter Olympics.

In all-time medal count the USA is second, trailing only Norway in both overall and gold medals. The upcoming Winter Olympics are expected to see Norway continue their success, at least according to the Olympic betting odds.

Interestingly, the United States’ odds have undergone some fairly significant changes over the last month and a half. Although they have remained fourth on the odds boards, they have gone from +600 to +800. However, as of late, the USA hasn’t performed too well in comparison to the field.

In 2018, the United States finished fourth in gold medals as they did in 2014. In 2010, they finished third in gold medal count and have seen similar results ever since 1932 - the last time the United States led the Winter Olympics in gold medals.

Norway’s Odds Getting Much Shorter

Back on October 11, Norway was the +185 favorite to lead all countries in gold medals. That line now looks like a steal as the country currently sits as the -250 favorite overall.

Norway has tied for the lead in gold medals in each of the last two Winter Olympics and is heavily favored to do so again.

It’s certainly no guarantee as it’s possible COVID plays a part in canceling events or forcing participants to miss an event, but as things stand Norway has been the best Winter Olympic country over the last 10+ years.

Sportsbooks Pull Olympic Hockey Odds With NHL Players Out

Canada was favored to win the Olympic hockey gold medal with +150 odds.
It is unclear which hockey players and leagues will participate in Beijing.

BEIJING - Following the announcement that the NHL and NHL Players Association have pulled all players from representing their countries in the 2022 Winter Olympics, sportsbooks have pulled all Olympic Ice Hockey odds.

The announcement that NHL players will not play in the the Olympics has left sportsbooks on thin ice. It is currently unclear which leagues will allow their players to be considered for the Winter Olympics.

Some speculate that the Russian Olympic Committee may see the largest Olympic betting odds benefit because of the NHL players lack of participation. The KHL - the second best hockey league in the world - is allowing players to participate in Beijing 2021 and is over 50% comprised of Russian athletes.

Finland (6%) and Czech Republic (6%) may also see their Olympic Ice Hockey odds shorten, as over a tenth of the KHL are of these nationalities.

Canada is in a different boat leaving the board as the betting favorite Despite a 7% representation in the KHL, Canada's hockey odds will likely get longer as notable NHL veterans like Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid and Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Alex Pietrangelo will be absent after being named to the team.

Canada has won two silver medals in the past (Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994) but putting together a team this late will be a real challenge for Shane Doan and Claude Julien. Even further, with concerns over health and safety of players, coaches, and staff, Canada also withdrew from the Spengler Cup on Monday.

Building Teams Without Professional Players

One possible route for the Americans and Canadians to go when building their teams is through the NCAA. Some options from the player pool for the Canadians include: Owen Power (1st overall selection), Mason McTavish (3rd selection), and Kent Johnson (5th). Americans Matty Beniers (2) and Luke Hughes (4th) provide the United States with some great options as well.

An important piece of recent history is that the 2018 Winter Olympics ice hockey tournament was also played with no NHL players.

The Russians won gold, Germany got silver and Canada got the bronze. The difference between then and now is that each country knew well in advance who would make up their teams. With the NHL pulling their players so close to the Olympics, many countries will be left in tough spots.

The Russian team was give +100 odds to win the Gold for the 2018 Winter Olympic tournament, which may give some indication as to how strong of an advantage they have given their KHL pipeline.

For that same tournament, Canada was given +450 odds and the USA was given +1000 odds to win the gold medal.

The 2022 Winter Olympics medal odds seem very similar to how the 2018 odds ended up. In the 2018 Games, Norway and Germany tied for the most gold medals with 14 each.

Norway, however, ended up with 39 overall medals to Germany’s 31, and are thus listed first in the official count.

Past Medal Counts For The Winter Olympics

In 2014, when the Olympics were held in Sochi, Russia came out on top, with 11 gold medals and 30 overall medals, beating Norway to the finish by four overall medals, despite both countries ending up with 11 golds to bring home.

The 2010 Olympics was the last time that the Winter Olympics had a true outright gold medal winner, as there were ties for the gold medal category in both 2014 and 2018.

In 2010, however, Norway dominated, winning 14 gold medals, while Germany won 10 gold medals.

If one considers 2014 to be an outlier due to Russia’s home-field advantage, Norway has been the most consistent country in terms of gold medal production for the Winter Olympic Games.

However, 2006 was the last time Norway was not near the top of the gold medal list, although Germany dominated in 2006 to the tune of 11 gold medals, two more than their closest competitor, the United States.

This review of the previous four events of the Winter Olympics should make it clear that Norway is likely going to be at the top of the medal count while Germany is another top contender and other countries outside of the two are considered the longshots.

This seems to match up with the way the odds were set up by sportsbooks - Norway and Germany at the top with no other countries under odds of +500.

However, it seems likely that these betting lines will change and shift as the Games get closer, so smart betting fans might want to jump on any of the better looking odds they see now while they’re still available.

Which Teams Will Be Favored?

As of this point, there are no Olympic betting odds available for the 2022 ice hockey event. However, it’s not too hard to figure out which teams will be the favorites.

Canada

The Canadians are the leaders of the hockey world. The country has won two of the last three gold medals and has the most gold medals of all time (9). From top to bottom, no country can compete in terms of talent.

United States

Auston Matthews, Patrick Kane, Johnny Gaudreau, Jack Eichel, Seth Jones and Connor Hellebuyck will likely lead the United States as the country looks for their first hockey gold medal since 1980.

The United States seems to always be competitive, but never the best. However, their talent should be enough to keep them towards the top on the short list of betting favorites.

Olympic Rosters At Full Strength

The 2018 Olympics didn’t have any NHL players as they weren’t allowed to leave their teams mid-season, however, that will not be the case in 2022. The NHL and NHL Player’s Union have made an agreement to allow players to compete in the Olympics with a scheduled break in the middle of the NHL season.

This likely gives Canada a much better shot to compete and the same can be said with the united States while Russia’s chance of repeating likely decreases a bit. Either way, there’s a lot of time for things to change and be solidified before the Olympics start.

How Russian Athletes Remain In The Olympics Despite Ban

Russia was banned from international sporting events until 2022 for doping.
Athletes now compete under the Russian Olympic Committee name.

TOKYO – With the Russian name being banned from this year’s Olympics due to the mass doping scandal from years ago, athletes will be competing under the name of the Russian Olympic Committee.

Other athletes from Russia have attempted to acquire dual citizenship to compete under a different countries name.

How Russia Got Banned

In 2015 it was reported that evidence was found that tied Russia with institutionalized doping as well as tampering with lab reports. The ban meant that Russia would be unable to use its name, flag and national anthem for international events including the Olympics.

For those interested in betting on the Olympics, this is why “ROC” will be listed next to the names of the athletes.

The Impact Of The Ban

Truthfully, there isn’t much impact on the country itself other than potentially on the country’s ego. Everybody still knows the athletes are Russian, Russia is still in the name of the committee, and they are still allowed to use the colors of the Russian flag.

However, there are some athletes who are attempting to go about things in a different way.

Some athletes have looked into acquiring dual citizenship for the ability to compete under a different country with Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan allegedly among the most active recruiting countries. Further, Matvey Volkov, a junior world record-holding pole vaulter left for Belarus to eventually compete for them as he didn’t like the direction Russia was heading.

Russian Olympic Committee In The 2021 Olympics

There is an expected 335 athletes that will be competing under the Russian Olympic Committee name in the 2021 Olympics. Many of which are projected to do fairly well.

As a whole, the Russian Olympic Committee has the third-shortest odds to lead the overall medal count behind only the United States and China.

Some of the most notable athletes that have legal Olympic betting odds for the ROC are Romanshina and Kolesnichenko who are overwhelming -1000 favorites to win the artistic swimming duet. Inna Deriglazova - a +110 favorite to win the women’s foil fencing event - and Sofya Velikaya, who has the second-shortest odds to win the women’s sabre fencing event.
