Tokyo Stadium At The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games

Tokyo Stadium, also known as Ajinomoto Stadium, is one of the larger stadiums that will host some of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games. While naming rights were sold to Ajinomoto Co. back in 2003, the International Olympic Committee has a non-commercialization policy which is why it will be referred to as Tokyo Stadium during the games. The stadium itself can hold a maximum of 49,970 spectators and is divided between an upper level that fits 20,600 and a lower level that fits 29,370 people. The upper levels have a roof covering them and it extends to the upper parts of the lower levels. However, if you’re planning on sitting in the lower levels to get a better view of the action, you should know that there is still a bit of distance between the soccer field and the stands.

While this might be a factor to consider for sports spectators, the venue itself is also used for many occasions outside of athletics altogether. Many concerts use this venue to perform live music and many flea markets use the space in order to sell local goods. Tokyo Stadium even provided as a shelter for those affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The stadium has proven itself to be a long-lasting staple in Japan and a perfect place to watch some of the 2020 Summer Olympic games.

2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Events at Tokyo Stadium

Given the size of Tokyo Stadium, some of the most popular sports in the world will be played here. The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics have scheduled three main events which include football (or soccer), rugby, and most aspects of the modern pentathlon.

There will be a total of 24 teams that play at this venue, 12 for the men’s side and 12 for the women’s side. Each team will only play with seven players and the rugby matches are going to take place from July 27 to August 1, 2020. The men’s competition will be played first and there will be two matches per day over a course of three days.

The modern pentathlon involves athletes with various skills across multiple sports. The pentathlon will take place at both Tokyo Stadium and the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza which is located right next door. A total of 36 athletes each will compete in both the men’s and women's events. The parts of the pentathlon that will take place at Tokyo Stadium include pistol shooting, show jumping, and a cross country run. Fencing and freestyle swimming will be held in the sports plaza.
