PARIS - Breakdancing, also known as just “Breaking” will be entering the Summer Olympics in 2024 in Paris. While it is still in the beginning stages, all final decisions should be made by the end of 2020. The search for a venue is well underway as members of the International Olympic Committee have approved of the sport being added as an event in the Olympics.

"As well as being spectacular and creative, they generate strong engagement among young people," said Tony Estanguet, the president overseeing Paris 2024, to reporters on BBC. "They also project the values that we hold dear in terms of openness and diversity."

Breaking At The Olympics

Breaking became a style of dance on the streets of New York City in the seventies. Since then, It has gained worldwide popularity in extreme numbers. Women that perform this style of dance are known as B-girls while the men are known as B-boys.

There will be a variety of things that will be judged during the Olympic games when it comes to breakdancing. Dancers will need to choose the right music for their performance as musicality is one of the categories being judged. Along with musicality, there will be the general performance, the personality of the dance, creativity, and the cleanliness of their technique. All moves that are performed have to be razor sharp to be able to obtain high scores.

At this time, the proposal suggests a men’s and a women’s group of competitors. Each group will have sixteen athletes competing for the gold. The adding of breaking to the Olympics is a tactic being used by the committee in order to appeal to a younger audience. The number of viewers in the younger demographics has dwindled in the last few Olympic tournaments.

“Our aim from the outset has been to highlight what has been the strength of the Games for 32 Olympiads now – the diversity of the sports and the excitement that comes with performance – while also taking the opportunity afforded by the IOC to enhance the programme and offer a new dimension.”

Olympic President 2024 Tony Estanguet said in an official statement.
